A discussion on technology of No Drilling Surprises （NDS）

NDS technology has functions of risk identification, prevention and control, which can be used to prevent occurrence of risks and improve drilling efficiency and effectiveness. The understanding of technical connotation of NDS is the problem to be resolved before developing and applying NDS technology. The concept, process and key technology of NDS are introduced, and cases of successful NDS technology applications both at home and abroad are listed. It is proposed that the technology be based on drilling mechanics, resort to real time measurement and control technology （including measurement, risk management, forecast and control technology） as well as 3D visualization technology, and form a drilling technology platform featuring in integration, informatization, intellectualization and automatization. This can be good reference to developing NDS technology with Chinese characteristics.
