Application of POWER-V and PD-XCEED steering vertical drilling technique in Bohai Oil Field

  • For the deep sections of the exploration wells in Bohai Oil Field, the existing characteristics which include high formation dip angle, a lot of sandstone/mudstone interbedding, severe hole deviation problems of drilled wells and formation collapsing. This paper summarizes the geological features of Bohai-2 and Bohai-3 Wells, evaluates the vertical fast drilling technique used at high dip angle sections, and introduces the theory of POWER-V and PD-XCEED steering vertical drilling tools and their application method. The comparison between two types of steering vertical drilling tools is conducted through the field application in Bohai Oil Field and detailed evaluation on the application performance of the two types of tools on technical and beneficial aspects is also carried out. The field application demonstrates that both of the two types of steering vertical drilling tools can effectively solve the contradictory relation between well deviation control and high WOB. The passively well deviation control method can be changed to actively control, and it also provides good direction for vertical fast drilling and low drilling cost in high dip angle formation sections.
