Application of MPD technology to Heng 6 well

Managed pressure drilling (MPD) can be used to solve drilling problems in narrow window in complex formations. Difficulties in the drilling of buried-hill formations of Heng 6 well in Huabei Oilfield are summarized in this paper. The downhole situations in the field are analyzed, MPD program design and parameter optimization are conducted from the perspectives of pressure control and prevention of lost circulation, the drilling equipment and operating process of MPD are introduced. Through the optimization of hydraulic parameter drilling fluid density, according to the downhole situations in the field, the drilling program is updated and more reasonable wellhead pressure is chosen to fulfill drilling successfully. Blowout and lost circulation is prevented, drilling speed is increased, and drilling efficiency is improved. MPD technology is novel to solve the drilling problems in complex geological conditions, and it may be helpful to the drilling of wells of the same type.
