Improving well productivity through sand management

  • Sand management is a new concept different from cold production and traditional sand control technique. It permits some sand to be produced to surface with fluid through reliable analysis and effective monitoring of sand influx. This technology can improve well productivity because of self-cleanup associated with the episodic sand bursts that take place. This paper analyses the sand production mechanism and its influence on formation porosity and permeability, presents some field cases that applied sand management to increase well production rates, and discusses the analysis and design tools that are needed for sand management.Ideas on how to apply sand management to improve well productivity in unconsolidated sandstone reservoir in our country are put forward.
