  • This paper introduced the definition, use and case history of extended reach drilling(ERD). ERD technology used in offshore and beach areas can save money for building artificial islands and barriers. It had obvious effectiveness in California of America, the North Sea of Europe and so on. The key technology of ERD include:reduce torque force and resistance, design the drilling stem with anti-high moment of torque, keep well bore stabilize and clean, reduce casing wear and so on. This paper emphasized that ERD technology should be used in beach areas as soon as possible to accelerate the exploration and development in China.
