Application of different lattice Boltzmann models in the simulation of capillary flow

  • Lattice Boltzmann method (LBM) has the advantages of simple model, easy programming and parallel computation when it is used to simulate pore-scale flow. As for each type of flow, the corresponding theoretical LBM models are put forward, but the applicability and validity of LBM model is still to be further studied. In view of the isothermal incompressible flow of fluid in the pore scale, different LBM models were adopted for modeling and programming. Then, the flow of single-phase fluid in the capillary tube was calculated, and the calculation results were compared with the corresponding analytical solutions. Finally, the numerical accuracy and stability of different LBM numerical models were analyzed. It is indicated that to simulate the steady flow in the capillary tube in the pore scale, the simulation result of Zou-Hou model is the most stable and the best coincident to the analytical solution. To simulate the unsteady flow, however, the Zou-Hou model cannot get the solution, so the priority shall be given to the He-Luo model. The research results provide the reference for applicability evaluation and model selection of porous medium flow simulation technologies.
