A new type design of AICD and its numerical simulation

  • Premature water/gas breakthrough may occur in long horizontal wells, so an inflow control device (ICD) installed in completion section can effectively address this problem. After water breakthrough in oil wells, the passive inflow control device (PICD) fails and all kinds of current adaptable inflow control devices (AICD) are more or less limited to some extent. So a new adaptable inflow control device is presented, composed of Y-diverter and a disc limiter. Its internal flow pattern was analyzed and structure parameters were optimized using numerical simulation software, and the fluid parameter sensitivity was studied based on optimization results. The research shows that this device is in its optimal structure when in radial connection mode, at 60° branch angle, having three Y-diverters, and it is not sensitive to density and viscosity. The newly designed device is strong in oil stabilization and water control, and has no moving parts and enjoys a broad application range in oil density and viscosity.
