Research on precise detection technology of relief wells for deepwater petroleum exploration

  • Deepwater oil and gas exploration and development has become a hot spot in oil industry, but accidents like blowout occur from time to time. The drilling of relief well is a very effective way to kill a blowout well. How to accurately determine the relative location of the relief well from the blowout well is a key to the relief. Using software to simulate blowout well with a radius of 139.7 mm, a 1 A current source and a ground electrode were set in its vicinity, then study was conducted on, the effects of the distance between current source and blowout well, the distance between the two electrodes and the radius of the blowout well on the current density on the casing in the blowout well. The research results show that the nearer the blowout well is to the relief well, the greater the current density is on the casing in the blowout well, and that the location of minimum current density on the casing in blowout well is closer to the location of electric current source. The location of the minimum current density in the blowout well is determined by the location of the point current source. The smaller the blowout well radius is, the greater the change of current density amplitude is, and the greater the amplitude of its above current density is. The research findings provide some theoretical basis for drilling offshore relief wells.
